A regulated nervous system is a learned body to body skill that we learn from our caregivers in early childhood. If our caregivers themselves did not have a regulated nervous system then we learn to have a dysregulated nervous system. A dysregulated nervous system leaves us easily triggered, quick to anger, stuck in freeze/numbness, disconnected from our bodies and difficulty connecting to others and a general feeling of not being safe, as well as a host of health implications. I consider learning to self regulate as essential groundwork for all trauma healing. Trauma can only be healed from a place of safety and one needs to be well regulated to feel safe.
